13 Uses for Essential Oils You Probably Never Knew About
Yes, it’s me again, the essential oil obsessed lady! But it’s been a few months since I last spoke about how vital essential oils are to my everyday life so I figured it was time to bring you some more magic from these little bottles. While many people are aware of the benefits of oil diffusing there are so few resources that provide additional uses for essential oils. I’m so excited to share with you some ways that essential oils can be used in your everyday life that you’ve likely never knew about! (I didn’t!)
If you’re interested in cleaning with essential oils, I rounded up my favorite oil combinations for cleaning my home! Check that out here.
Glowing Skin
Ok, so it is SERIOUSLY some kind of magic or witchcraft when it comes to essential oils and skincare. I’ve been using drops of oils in my favorite skincare products forever. Geranium oil is great for tightening skin and keeping off dead skin cells for brighter skin. Blue Tansy and Frankincense are also sent from heaven. All you have to do is add a few drops to your bottle, but if you want to make something fun - you can make a Glow Roller or a Skin Serum of your own. I’ll post some of my favorite recipes for these soon!
I also have been using lavender on myself anytime I get a burn. From kitchen-related burns to sunburn, throwing some lavender almost triples the standard healing time. When I was pregnant with Graham, I picked up the handle of a pan that I was baking a frittata in (d’oh!) - My hand as you can imagine, was red and throbbing. Lavender oil brought instant relief and I would not just tell you that!
Odor Prevention around the House
Obviously you know essential oils smell amazing, but they can also be SO handy around the house for preventing and removing smelly situations. Here are a few ways!
-
Douse a cotton ball with lemon oil and put at the bottom of a new trash bag to eliminate odors
-
Create a spray bottle of your favorite floral essential oil and spray on faux flowers for an added boost
-
Add a few drops of peppermint to a fresh paint can before using to diminish the strong smells
-
Bathroom spray usually has such strong and potent scents. Making your own with EO is the way to go!
-
Car air fresheners - just add some drops to a cotton ball and clip it to your air vents! So long, expensive car-wash scents!
-
Add about 15 drops of lemon oil to a baking soda fridge box
-
If your house still smells like dinner from the night before - boil some water and add a few drops of lemon. Let it simmer for about 15 minutes!
-
Smelly shoes? Fill a sock with some baking soda and add 5 drops of tea tree oil to it. Tie it off with a rubber band or hair tie and let it sit inside the shoe for a few hours!
Laundry Care
I’ve been using some sort of essential oil in my laundry routine for years now. We love dryer balls in this house, so adding a few drops to the balls before I throw them in with our towels gives them the most lovely scent that lasts until we use them again. I *haaaaate* folding laundry, so at least having the clothes smell good makes it more enjoyable. I use Valor and Peace & Calming oils typically!
I also know so many people who use a few drops of essential oils in their favorite fragrance-free detergent to get the natural scent they desire. So you could try it this way as well! Oh, and I also use Thieves sometimes in the wash cycle when I really want to eliminate germs!!
Sponge Trick for the Microwave
Yeah, I’m all about new tricks! Take a dish sponge and get it really wet. Add some dish soap and a few drops of your fav essential oil scent to the sponge. Put it in the microwave for 30 seconds and then let it sit there for about a minute. Open the microwave and wipe it with the sponge - everything should come off AND it will smell amazing!
