My All Natural First Aid Cabinet

IMG_4497.jpg

Part of my nighttime and weekend projects lately includes  looking for ways to make my home a little cleaner and greener. It’s hard with 3 kids, but I figure each little change makes a positive difference.  Some things I have changed are: a swap to reusable storage containers, organizing and sanitizing high-traffic areas of the house, and doing inventory on our “first aid cabinet”.

And then I thought - you might also be interested in this. I’m working on a post about all of the swaps in my house, but I thought this one was a good start given summer approaching and lots of time in our yards (aka boo boos). I should also note that it’s not a real cabinet, because we truly don’t have that much. We keep some pain reducers for the kids and adults for when they are needed, a thermometer, and then - the cool stuff!

Here are THREE things you might not think about when it comes to your first aid kit.

A topical do-it-all - Skin Balm

First of all - my new fav addition is by HONEOYE REMEDIES.

I literally have a cut almost every day from ripping at my cuticles (I know, terrible habit!) I also have 3 kids under 5 so needless to say, they are falling pretty often. Oven burns from quarantine baking? Great there too. Potential long story short - we have a lot of boo-boos around here.

Before you run for the typical stuff for cuts (like I used to) let's talk about what's in there. While most of the traditional ointments and creams help heal the injury, they’re also full of chemicals, toxic ingredients, and harmful substances that are disrupting your health in other ways.

Honeoye Remedies Skin Balm has a unique blend of Manuka Honey, Tea Tree Oil, Vitamin E and Oat Extract. It was developed in a laboratory by a doctor and a scientist who knew there had to be something better for their families. And there in that same lab, it was tested to make sure that it does the job you want it to. (spoiler, it does! And better than what you use now!) Here’s why.

Manuka Honey is very well-known for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and cosmetic properties (and Honeoye is using the highest industry standard available). What does this mean? It’s great for boo-boos, and my 4-year-old even sees it! After just a few hours, we can see a marked improvement in the appearance of her boo-boo. She even asks to use it herself (“Mom, can I have the honey?”) The Honeoye blend also includes Tea Tree Oil, a natural antiseptic, also carrying anti-inflammatory properties. The Vitamin E and Oat Extract are in this blend because they have been shown to be gentle to sensitive skin and improve the appearance of scarring.

BONUS: I also use the PATCH bandages that Honeoye distributes in their online store that carries the Skin Balm. They are totally organic and biodegradable bamboo bandages, some with additions like aloe or activated charcoal. AND they have cute little panda prints for the kids (all that said, yes, we also have Elsa bandages :-P)

Peppermint Two Ways

I am a huge fan of essential oils and herbal remedies. There are two ways I use peppermint. (1) If I feel a headache coming on, I like to put peppermint essential oil behind my ears and on the bottom of my feet. (2) I use peppermint leaves in a tea form if I need digestive support!

Apple Cider Vinegar

I keep a bottle of this in my kitchen, not in the bathroom, but this is where it is most useful! Make sure your bottle is organic and has “the mother” (you’ll see all the swirly goodness at the bottom of the bottle)

Not only does apple cider vinegar have an extensive list of internal health benefits (hence why it is in my kitchen), but it can also be used topically to help with a wide array of external ailments. It has astringent and antibacterial properties and can help with conditions involving inflammation and infection. It can help with things like athlete’s foot, nail fungus, poison ivy, and warts, ear infections/ swimmer’s ear, nosebleeds and more! I am not a doctor, so I don’t want to provide any dosage amounts but you can google what others are doing for the amounts. I usually see a 50/50 dilution.

So tell me, what are YOU including in your kits that I need to know about?! Is there anything I am missing?
