How to Recharge and Refocus at Home
What a strange time this is. In my 36 years of life, I have never been forced indoors for an extended period of time - outside of Hurricane Sandy. We were in Hoboken and stuck in our apartment for 3 days.
In a time where the smartest things to do are to stay home, in isolation from the rest of the world, how do we get through it with our sanity in tact? I have a few ideas (whether you have kids in your home or not) to keep light in your life and stay positive through it all.
And as usual, I always want feedback! What are you doing to get through isolation and quarantine?
Get Sunlight
Yes. Taking a few steps outside of your door alone and letting the sun hit your face is still within the guidelines of isolation. As long as you are not in contact with humans outside, you are safe to walk outside and allow the sun to warm you. If you share a front door with other people (like in an apartment complex) I would wear gloves and disinfect any common areas you may be touching when doing this, like the door handle or railings.
Be Kind to your Body
As busy as you might be - inside and out, now is the time to treat yourself well. Make sure you’re getting enough water every day and make sure to move your body in between work sessions. FOR WATER - fill up the biggest receptacle you have every morning and add a fresh squeezed lemon. Aim to refill this 1-2 more times throughout the day.
For movement - I’ve been doing 20 minute exercise routines with at least 2 of the 3 kids around me, a few days a week. (Every day is not as realistic for me, but it might be for you!) If you are home alone and you are bored — make a promise to yourself to move for 10 minutes. When you find yourself scrolling through instagram, get up and move instead! Either set a certain time on your calendar for movement each day, the same way you would a meeting or call, or have a trigger - ie, the first time you log into IG, it’s time for movement :) - Get dressed in your workout clothes each morning so you are ready any time. And look for your local studios who have likely put work outs online in some way (and this way you can still support them). If you are new to exercise, there are a lot of apps, and free videos on YouTube.

Create Something
Grab your kids, your significant other, or your roommate and create something or get inspired. Google a new skill you’ve been wanting to try out and find videos that will teach you). Keep the kids engaged with art projects, an app or a website (I’ve been using ABC Mouse). Or, maybe work on that passion project you’ve been putting off - a new website? podcast? writing a book?
If you don’t want to create something - look for inspiration in others and pick up a new book to read, person or subject to study (I have a weird fascination of drug cartels and people who work in finance so sometimes I watch documentaries on these subjects just to learn more about how their brains work!).
I hope this helps everyone getting a little stir-crazy this week and next. Wishing you all the best.
