5 Things you Need in Every Bedroom

When you are rearranging or redecorating a room, what are some of your must-haves?

We’ve been doing a lot of switch-a-roos since we moved into this house last year as we try to figure out the perfect layout for who goes where. Once the girls found out what a bunk bed was - they needed to have that, and I thought “well, that frees up a bigger space for an office and guest room!” (Plus, maybe they won’t come down into our bedroom every night. That was wishful thinking.)

So we recently moved both girls into PJ’s room, and turned Carmen’s bed into a proper guest bed. The last step is to put John’s desk in here to make this an office as well. We’ll likely put it on the left side here next to the closet and window so there is some nice light.

As I was thinking through all of these new spaces - the following checklist came to mind. I’m curious if you think through these as well, or if your list is different!

  1. COMFORT -  I want to make sure each room is cozy and feels like a retreat. I achieve this with different bedding and pillow layers, curtains, and a fun rug, without going overboard. I keep the colors pretty neutral and simple, with some pops here and there. In a bedroom, I want the theme to feel natural. I will usually only put 2 things on the wall - a mirror, and art or an art set as you see here. I’ll keep the rest of the space pretty open. Something personal is always a nice option, too, whether it’s frame artwork that the kids made or an old photo in a guest room.

I also love to use a diffuser in each bedroom to bring in comforting, sleepy scents. I’ll pick a smaller option and sort a few essential oils along with it as options for nighttime. Since I am the oil lady of our house - I get the kids’ diffusers running while they are getting their baths, and if we have guests coming over, I will start theirs before they arrive.

  2. GOOD AIR - I once heard that keeping the air in your bedroom clean is as important as keeping the surfaces clean.  Whether it’s a new baby, toddlers, or our guests - so much time is spent sleeping in that room and I want to ensure it is clean and fresh! This can be accomplished with fresh plants, diffusers and of course - an air purifier. The new Levoit VeSync Core™ 400S is featured here in our new guest room. Our air quality is noticeably better than before since using the Core 400 and it also helps us to reduce our household odors, keeping the upstairs rooms smelling fresh and clean. The PM2.5 Display on the Core 400 actually tells you the amount of airborne particles detected! I feel so much better when I see how many it detects in our rooms because I know they’re getting cleared out!

  3. A SOLID EDIT/CLEAN SLATE - Though I leave room for decor, I really try to keep the space as SIMPLE as possible. Clutter clutters the mind and that’s the last thing I want for a peaceful bedroom!  When it comes to the kids’ spaces, limiting stimulation is a benefit to their circadian rhythm, prompting a healthy sleep routine while they absolutely need it! The first thing I do in any new space is edit. Get rid of anything that doesn’t serve the space before you start to rearrange or add in more pieces.

Also, yes, the girls have more toys than we have in this guest room, but they all have a place and should go back to said place before the end of the day. I utilize (too many, according to John) baskets and bins to keep everything organized and part of a system. Dolls have a place, doll accessories have a place, animals have a place - if all of it is jumbled together, it feels too messy to me.

  4. LIGHTING OPTIONS - I like to have two options for lighting in each bedroom, something small and less bright, and then an added larger option, whether that is a larger lamp or ceiling lighting. I think it’s nice to be able to have low lighting before bed, especially for the kids! Getting tons of fresh air and light in the child’s room has been shown to improve sleep patterns, as well as their mental well being. As an added bonus, adding natural light is even a natural disinfectant! Rearranging furniture or replacing the curtains and blinds with a quality set is a great way to enhance the natural light that is available for the room.

  5. PLANTS - I mentioned these briefly above, but having live or what-look-to-be-live plants really make the room! You don’t have to create a jungle, but 1-3 nice options are great to bring in some color, nature, and accentuate the comfort of the room.

Back to air quality - not only does the Levoit VeSync Core™ 400S air purifier capture smoke, odors, and VOCs, but the HEPASmart™ Technology enhances filtration, capturing 99.99% of bacteria and mold and 99.9% of viruses. It’s also super sleek - right? I think there is always an issue with messing up the aesthetic of a room with a bulky object.

Some other key features for busy parents like us include:

•Lock mode for kids (amazing)

•Sleep mode (so it’s low & quiet)

•A timer on the app so you can schedule when it’s on and off (think about coming home from vacation and wanting it on to circulate the air before you arrive!)

It’s also super-light and very movable so it can move around from room to room as you need it. I will even bring it down to the kitchen if we accidentally burn something, and have been contemplating a second for Graham’s room when we change his diapers (lol).
