Recipe: Hot Coconut COCOA

It's cold -  let's talk hot chocolate! Of course, I've created a healthier hot chocolate. What usually signifies "healthy" to you? Low fat? Sugar free? Low calorie?Meh.I personally like to look at a few things:

  1. Is there any junk in this? Stuff I can't pronounce?
  2. What is the sweetener? Is it a chemical, lots of sugar, or something that (in moderation) is going to give me some vitamins or minerals or at least not totally derail my blood sugar?
  3. Are there nutritional benefits to the ingredients I have chosen?

Awesome - so that's what I did here. The taste is on-point, so you won't miss anything there, and it hits all of my "healthy" criteria. In fact, I'll tell you quickly the benefits of some of the ingreds:

  • Coconut: a "healthy fat" - supports immune health. anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, a natural source of energy, improves digestion and absorption of nutrients. Like, I use coconut oil in place of neosporin.
  • Cacao Powder: a "superfood" - lots of magnesium, more calcium than cow's milk, TONS of antioxidants. It's the RAW form of cocoa powder, before it is roasted, so you are getting all that raw goodness.
  • Maca: another "superfood" - rich in vitamins B, C and E, calcium, magnesium, calcium and zinc, increases endurance and can help with some hormone imbalance
  • Cinnamon: adds amazing flavor here + has been shown to lower blood sugar

OK, let's get to it!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • ¼ tsp coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1 tbsp coconut sugar
  • ½ tsp maca
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon

Instructions (serves 1):

  1. In a small saucepan, mix coconut milk and coconut oil over medium heat, but do not boil.
  2. When warm, whisk in dry ingredients and serve immediately.
