Braxton Hicks Contractions vs. Labor Contractions

While many women experience Braxton Hicks contractions throughout their pregnancy, labor contractions are much different. As I discussed in this previous post, Braxton Hicks contractions won't be painful. You will definitely be able to tell the difference between the two. Labor contractions will feel different for everyone, but there are characteristics that will be similar regardless of who you are.

Instead of the tightening sensation that someone may feel during Braxton Hicks, labor contractions of any kind will be more intense. For a lot of women, contractions start in the lower abdomen or back and feel like cramps. In the beginning, they may be spread far apart so you are able to move and stretch to become more comfortable. However, as things progress, so will the contractions and usually the pain.

Many women describe labor contractions as intense menstrual cramps that come in waves as the contraction peaks and then dissipates. Others describe it as intense diarrhea cramps or the tightening of a belt around their back, stomach, and hips. While it truly is different for every person, in general, you will feel an all-over tightening of your stomach with cramping that radiates from your back to front.
